A report about how American college students manage their finances includes data from a survey of college students. Each person in a representative sample of 793 college students was asked if they had one or more credit cards and if so, whether they paid their balance in full each month. There were 500 who paid in full each month. For this sample of 500 students, the sample mean credit card balance was reported to be $825. The sample standard deviation of the credit card balances for these 500 students was not reported, but for purposes of this exercise, suppose that it was $200. Is there convincing evidence that college students who pay their credit card balance in full each month have a mean balance that is lower than $905, the value reported for all college students with credit cards? Carry out a hypothesis test using a significance level of 0.01.

State the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses.

- H0: μ = 905

Ha: μ > 905

H0: μ < 905

Ha: μ > 905

H0: μ = 905

Ha: μ ≠ 905

H0: μ > 905

Ha: μ < 905

H0: μ = 905

Ha: μ < 905

Find the test statistic and P-value. (Use a table or technology. Round your test statistic to one decimal place and your P-value to three decimal places.)

t =

P-value =

State the conclusion in the problem context.

We fail to reject H0. We do not have convincing evidence that college students who pay their credit card balance in full each month have a mean balance that is lower than $905.

We reject H0. We have convincing evidence that college students who pay their credit card balance in full each month have a mean balance that is lower than $905.

Answer #1

The statistical software output for this problem is:

From above output:

Hypotheses:

H0: μ = 905

Ha: μ < 905

t = -8.9

P = 0.000

Conclusion: We reject H0. We have convincing evidence that college students who pay their credit card balance in full each month have a mean balance that is lower than $905.

In a study entitled How Undergraduate Students Use Credit Cards, it was reported that undergraduate students have a mean credit card balance of $3,173. This figure was an all-time high and had increased 44% over the previous five years. Assume that a current study is being conducted to determine if it can be concluded that the mean credit card balance for undergraduate students has continued to increase compared to the original report. Based on previous studies, use a population standard...

A company surveyed adult Americans about their consumer debt. They reported that 46% of Millennials (those born between 1980 and 1996) and 61% of Gen Xers (those born between 1965 and 1971) did not pay off their credit cards each month and therefore carried a balance from month to month. Suppose that these percentages were based on representative samples of 450 Millennials and 300 Gen Xers. Is there convincing evidence that the proportion of Gen Xers who do not pay...

A paper included analysis of data from a national sample of 1,000 Americans. One question on the survey is given below. "You owe $3,000 on your credit card. You pay a minimum payment of $30 each month. At an Annual Percentage Rate of 12% (or 1% per month), how many years would it take to eliminate your credit card debt if you made no additional charges?" The report "Digital Democracy Survey"† describes a large national survey. In a representative sample of Americans ages 14 to 18 years, 45% indicated that they usually use social media while watching TV. Suppose that the sample size was 500. A class survey in a large class for first-year college students asked, "About how many hours do you study during a typical week?" The mean response of the 493 students was x = 15.3 hours. Suppose that we know that the study time follows a Normal distribution with standard deviation σ = 8.5 hours in the population of all first-year students at this university. Regard these students as an SRS from the population of all first-year students at this university....
