What is an example of when you might want a large standard deviation? That is, data that is more spread out?

Answer #1

See in a factory , we require all types of people from labourer to top official of management . They all possess different level of education , physical strength and salary .

So if plot graph according to education vs no. of people or salary vs no. of people we will get a spreaded graph and thus high standard deviation . and this is what we require . We require all types of people with pay scales according to the availability and skills . We require labour to carry out physical works , then we require engineers to look after them , then comes senior engineer and so on....

so here we require large standard deviation.

Give me a real-life example of a data distribution that you think is approximately normal, but with a large spread (i.e. large standard deviation). Use Google or other research methods to find the mean and standard deviation to support your claim. What reasons or conditions attribute to the large variation? (Here's my example: income - some people make minimum wage, some people make $134M over 4 years. Think of another example and do some research to find the standard deviation,...

We have seen that the standard deviation σ measures the spread of a data set about the mean μ. Chebyshev's inequality gives an estimate of how well the standard deviation measures that spread. One consequence of this inequality is that for every data set at least 75% of the data points lie within two standard deviations of the mean, that is, between μ − 2σ and μ + 2σ (inclusive). For example, if μ = 20 and σ = 5,...
