A variable is discrete if only a limited number of values thr variable can take in a given interval. If there are infinite values possible in any interval, the variable is continuous.

Age in years - continuous
Numeric date of birth - discrete
Shoe size - discrete (even if leg size is measured as a continuous variable, shoe sizes available have limited number of fixed values, making it discrete)
