confusing mean and median

Answer #1

I think that the problem is about finding the mean and median of the data given.

Mean= Sum of all observations/ total no. of observations

Here, we are given the ages of 18 motorcylists, thus the Mean= (17+28+27+....+21+30+25)/18

= 475/18= 26.39

Hence, the mean for the given data is 26.39

Now, for caculating the median, let us put the observations in the ascending order, viz.

14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 28, 30, 31, 34, 37, 40, 42.

Median is given as the middle most observation of a given data set. Here, since the total no. of observations is even i.e. 18, thus the median is given as the arithmetic mean of the two middle terms, viz., 25 and 27. Thus median= (25+27)/2= 52/2= 26.

Hence the median of the given data is 26.

2. In a country called Karpee's Nation, Sixty (60) persons were
asked about their ages in completed years and they responded as
follow:
34 34 40 42 40 42 29 30 28 44 25 37 37 42 29 33
34 29 43 41 25 40 37 33 32 37 40 51 28 27 31 64
38 40 30 41 51 30 48 24 28 33 35 40 31 29 35 46
27 34 28 29 35 30 29...

using the following data set, create a box plot for
this question.

Studies are often done by pharmaceutical companies to determine
the effectiveness of a treatment program. Suppose that a new AIDS
antibody drug is currently under study. It is given to patients
once the AIDS symptoms have revealed themselves. Of interest is the
average length of time in months patients live once starting the
treatment. Two researchers each follow a different set of 40 AIDS
patients from the start of treatment until their deaths. The
following data (in months) are collected....
