Use SPSS to determine the correlation between hours of studying and GPA for these honor students. Why is the correlation so low?
Hours of StudyingGPA
233.95
123.90
154.00
143.76
163.97
213.89
143.66
113.91
183.80
93.89
We define the variables in SPSS like this: HOURS = hours of studying and GPA = GPA score. We calculated the correlation value between these two variables by running the following SPSS code.
CORRELATIONS
/VARIABLES=HOURS GPA
/PRINT=TWOTAIL NOSIG
/MISSING=PAIRWISE.
The correlation value is coming out to be as 0.1442. The correlation is low because if we draw a scatterplot using the two variables, we will see that the points are scattered. This tells us that the GPA scores are not so much related to how much hours do students take to study.
