Question

the
teo most frequently used measures off central tendency are the mean
and the median. compare these two measurements for the following
characteristics . takes every score into ain't? affected by extreme
scores? advantages? disadvantages ?

Answer #1

Answer)

When the data is normally distributed, the best central of tendency is mean

By normal distribution, we mean symmetrical data, there are almost equal data points on each side of mean

Advantage :

Mean = (sum of the observations)/number of observations), as mean uses every value in the data, it is a good representative

Disadvantage :

As mean include every point in data, it also includes outliers.

And when the data is skewed, best central of tendency is median

By skewed, we mean there is a long tail on one side of the peak

Median is the middlemost data point

Advantage :

Median is less affected by the outliers

Disadvantage :

It do not uses every value of the data, so sometimes we do not get the exact central value.

Mean, median, and mode are the three measures of central
tendency that we learned about in this class. We use these to
describe the center of a distribution. For each of the following
examples please identify which measure of central tendency should
be used given the situation.
A negatively skewed distribution
A platykurtic distribution

The most frequently used measures of central tendency for
quantitative data are the mean and the median. The following table
shows civil service examination scores from 24 applicants to law
enforcement jobs:
83 74 85 79
82 67 78 70
18 93 64 27
93 98 82 78
68 82 83 99
96 62 93 58
Using Excel, find the mean, standard deviation, and 5-number
summary of this sample.
Construct and paste a box plot depicting the 5-number
summary.
Does the dataset have outliers? If so, which one(s)?...

What are measures of central tendency? What do they tell us? Do
mean, median, and mode fall in the same order? Be able to
calculate/identify each.

For each variable, any measures of central tendency (e.g., mean,
median and mode) that can be calculated should be noted.
Are the following correct:
Calories-scale/ratio-mean, median, and mode
Exercise-nominal-mode
TV- scale/ratio-mean, median, and mode
Fruits- scale/ratio-mean, median, and mode
Insurance-nominal- mode
Diabetes-nominal—mode
Age-scale/interval/ratio-mean, median, and
mode
Education level-ordinal- median and mode
Yearly salary-scale/ratio-mean, median, and
mode
Sleep-scale/ratio-mean, median, and mode
Alcohol-scale/ratio-mean, median, and mode

What is the goal of central tendency?
The goal of central tendency is to
find the “middle” of a distribution. It identifies one single
measure that best describes a set of data
Find the mean, median, and mode for
the following sample of scores: 5, 4, 5, 2, 7, 1, 3, 5
Mean________4_______
Median_______4.5________ Mode_______5________
Find the mean, median, and mode for the following sample of
scores: 3, 5, 7,, 3, 9, 8, 3,...

choose the most appropriate measure of central
tendency (mean, median, mode) and dispersion(range, inter
quartiles, standard deviation) and whyd you choose them
a scientist is studying the effect of socioeconomic
class on the average family size. while reviewing the distribution
of the collected data, the scientist found that a large majority of
the families had two or less children while very few families had 5
or more children

In chapter 3, it was noted that the mean is the most commonly
used measure of central tendency. Partly because variance and
standard deviation are directly related to the mean, these two
values are the most common measures of variability. Explain how
variance and standard deviation are related to the mean.

median, mode) to represent our data.
