A farmer is studying the relationship between the amount of feetilizer used for a crop and the yeild (in bushels) of the crop.

The explanatory (independent variable) in this study would be?
a- the amount of fertilizer in tons per acre
b- the crop yeild in bushels per acre
c- the amount of rainfall in inches
d- the number of acres planted

The response (dependent variable) in this study would be?

same A, B, C, or D from above

The lurking variable would be?

same A, B, C, or D from above

Answer #1

1. Explanatory variable : a. the amount of fertilizer in tons per acre

2. response variable : b. the crop yield in bushels per acre

3. lurking variable : d. the number of acres planted

Explanation : Clearly, one would be interested to see how amount of fertilizer affects the crop yield and not the other way around so response and explanatory variables are clear. Now, if more acres are planted then amt of fertilizer will be higher and also crop yield can be higher. But amount of rainfall is not going to have any effect on amt of fertilizer so it cant be lurking variable .
