An experiment was conducted to test the susceptibility of high school juniors to peer pressure. 20 boys and 20 girls were chosen at random. 10 juniors of each gender were assigned to an experimental group, and the other 10 of each gender to a control group. Each student was asked to estimate the length of the line projected on the screen, relative to a reference line, which was projected a foot below. In the experimental group, for "stooges" (the experimenter’s assistants) announced estimates of the line that were 40% too large, then asked the students to make an estimate; in the control group, the estimates of the "stooges" varied slightly around the correct value. Each of the 40 students was tested separately.
What violations of the assumptions might be suspected in this experiment?
