Explain the conceptual problem with the variance that is the reason why the standard deviation is gernally used instead?

Answer #1

We know that,

Though both are measures of dispersion, still there is a subtle difference between the two. Standard deviation is expressed in the same unit of the original dataset as opposed to variance which is expressed as the squared units. Unlike variance, standard deviation is much more intuitive and closer to the values of the original data set. Therefore it is used more often to get an idea of what is normal in the population.

With respect to calculating variance and standard deviation for a sample, What value will you get when you sum the deviation scores (x – M)? Is it possible to obtain a negative value for the variance or the standard deviation? Standard deviation and variance are measures of distance and are always greater than or equal to zero. It is therefore not possible to obtain a negative value for the variance or the standard deviation.
