Assume we have two fertilisers: F1 and F2. We want to test whether the effect of the two are same on the yield of a crop or not.

In order to test this, we picked, say m fields/plots of the crop, where we applied fertiliser F1, and n fileds/plots of the crop, where we applied fertiliser F2 and measured the respective the yields.

Here our Independent Variable(IV) is the Fertiliser type with two levels: F1 and F2

The dependent variable (DV) is the yield we measured.

Then, for the problem we posed we have the following null vs alternative:

We can use the independent samples t-test for this.
