Draw/Create a pareto chart for the data set described below. Recently, I had the opportunity to assist the Office of Engineering Outreach and Recruitment in the College of Engineering. We gathered a random sample of 100 students and found the following frequencies for each the ethnicity categories below. Thirty-three students identified as Caucasian/White, forty-eight students identified as Hispanic/Latino(a), thirteen students identified as American Indian/Native American, and six students identify as Asian/Pacific Islander.

Answer #1

Solution: The data from the question is tabulated as below.

We will calculate the cumulative percentage for the number of student to draw the Pareto graph.

For Hispanic/Latino(a), cumulative %=48/(48+33+13+6)*100=48%

Caucasian/White, cumulative %=(48+33)/(48+33+13+6)*100=81% and so on.

Ethnicity Category No. of students cumulative(%)
Hispanic/Latino(a) 48 48%
Caucasian/White 33 81%
American Indian/Native American 13 94%
Asian/Pacific Islander 6 100%

The Pareto graph for the above data set is as below.
