Answer #1
  • For the given data calculate the mean (simple average of the numbers)
  • Then for each number: subtract the Mean and square the result.
  • Then work out the mean of those squared differences.
  • Take the square root of that then we get standard deviation

Example:

consider the data 8 , 10, 12, 6, 11, 9 = x

n = 6

=

= 8 + 10 + 12 + 6 + 11+ 9 = 56

= 56 / 6

= 9.333

sample variance =

standard deviation =

= (8 - 9.333)2 + (10 - 9.333)2+ (12 - 9.333)2+ (6 - 9.333)2+ (11 - 9.333)2+ (9 - 9.333)2= 23.333

(1 / 6 - 1) * 23.333 = 4.6666

standard deviation = = 2.1602.
