Sir Ronald Fisher analyzed much data regarding crop (i.e. plant) experiments during his lifetime. Suppose one day he was instead interested in determining whether beer, wine, milk, or green tea is better to drink while watching his plants grow. He enlisted his colleagues for the experiment and randomly assigned each of them to drink one of these beverages while watching plants grow for 8 hours. The dependent variable in this case was how much fun the colleague had when sitting and watching plants grow, on a scale from 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating more fun. Prior to conducting the experiment, he asked his colleagues to predict how much fun it would be to watch plants grow, with their guesses on the same rating scale. The interpretation of the significant effect of drink type on fun is:

At least one of the means for fun while using beer, wine, milk, or green tea while planting is different from the rest.

Since one of the means is different hence we will conduct post hoc analysis to determine which of the drink types are different from each other.
