Researchers claim that women speak significantly more words
per day than men in a certain university. One estimate is that a
woman uses about 20,000 words per day. To investigate such claims,
one study used a special device to record the conversations of male
students over a four-day period. From these recordings, the daily
word counts of the 20 men in the study were determined and was
found to have a mean of 16,367 words per day. Assuming the standard
deviation for words spoken per day, whether male or female in the
university is 3000 words, would it be valid at the .05 level of
significance to conclude that the mean number of words per day of
men at this university is less than that of women?
