1. What conclusions can you draw from the data gathered from one small bag compared to several small bags of M&Ms?

2. A 5 pound bulk bag of M&Ms holds approximately 2400 pieces. How many of each color should we expect to find in the bag based on the results of the proportions from the entire class? (approximate number of each color to be rounded to the nearest whole M&M)

  1. A bag of M&Ms is dumped on the table and you count 97 blue pieces. Approximately how many M&Ms do you expect to be in the entire bag based on the proportions of the entire class?
  2. According to Mars, the makers of M&Ms, their factory produces 25% blue, 25% orange, and 12.5% for each of the remaining colors. How do the observed values based on the entire class compare to these?
  3. What are some of the reasons why our bags would differ from the expected distribution?
  4. Why would Mars not put equal amounts of each color in every bag?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1.) The conclusion drawn from data is that there is a difference between real situation and approximate value. Because a product is whole product can not be divided into decimals.

2.) There is 2400 pieces in bag . According to entire class 25% blue which is

25% of 2400 =600

600 are blue colour.

600 are orange colour.

The remaining each colour is 300.

97 of blue colour means 25% of some number which is approximately 388 or 390

Our bag is differ from expected distribution because there are whole pieces that will either included or not included . Not a chance for half included and half not included.

Mars not included equal amount in each bag because there are six colour. On the basis of percentage it is not possible to divide in six equal parts.
