Let A and B be two independent events such that P(A) = 0.17 and P(B) = 0.63. What is P(A or B)? Your answer should be given to 4 decimal places.

An urn contains 27 red marbles, 20 blue marbles, and 42 yellow marbles. One marble is to be chosen from the urn without looking.

Answer #1

Answer 1

Let A and B be two independent events such that P(A) = 0.17 and P(B) = 0.63.

P(A or B)

= P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)

= P(A) + P(B) - P(A)*P(B)

= 0.17 + 0.63 - 0.17*0.63

= 0.6929

Answer 2

An urn contains 27 red marbles, 20 blue marbles, and 42 yellow marbles. One marble is to be chosen from the urn without looking.

P(choosing red or blue marble)

= P(red) + P(blue)

An urn contains 4 marbles, either blue or green. The number of blue marbles is equally likely to be 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4. Suppose we do 3 random draws with replacement, and the observed sequence is: blue, green, blue. What is the probability the urn contains just 1 blue marble?
