Sharon is debating whether or not to wait in line for donuts. She decided to use the random number generator on her calculator to make this decision. She sets the bounds to include any real number from 1 to 5. If she gets a number that is within 0.189 of the nearest integer, then she won’t wait in line. What is the probability that Sharon waits in line for donuts?

Answer #1

According to given conditions in the question Sharon will not wait in line if the number she get is

between 1 and 1 + 0.189

between 2 0.189

between 3 0.189

between 4 0.189

between 5-0.189 and 5

So the total sum of all these ranges will give us the numbers where sharon will not wait in line

n(she wont wait in line) = 8 * 0.189 = 1.512

n(total) = 5 - 1 = 4

n(she will wait in line) = n(total) - n(she wont wait in line)

n(she will wait in line) = 4 - 1.512

n(she will wait in line) = 2.488

P(she will wait in line) = n(she will wait in line) / n(total)

P(she will wait in line) = 2.488 / 4

P(she will wait in line) = 0.622
