An employee at an orange juice factory is concerned that the machine is under-filling bottles that are supposed to contain 500mL. A random sample of 15 containers is therefore taken and the volume in each recorded in the file file below. In researching the problem the employee sees a statement in the machine’s manual that “juice machine follows a normal distribution”.

(a) Write down the null and alternate hypothesis.

(b) Say why the statement in the manual is important to this analysis and then write down the name of the test to be employed

(c) Write down the decision rule in terms of a test statistic and give the corresponding decision rule using a p value. (5% level of significance)

(d) Calculate the value of the test statistic

(e) Do you reject the null hypotheses or otherwise, justify your decision and then draw a conclusion that answers the original question

It is known that when the machine is working properly, the mean length of the rods is 36 inches. According to design, the standard deviation of the lengths of all rods produced on this machine is always equal to .05 inches. The quality control department...
