How much sleep are students really getting? You wish to know the true mean hours of sleep for all students at WSU on any given school night. You survey 64 students and find that the sample average is 5.3 hours of sleep. With a known standard deviation of 5 hours and a level of significance of 1%, is the population mean hours of sleep for students at WSU different than 7 hours?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given, sample size = 64

sample mean = 5.3 hours

Population standard deviation = 5 hours

Significance level = 0.01 (1%)

The null and alternative hypotheses are,

H0 : μ = 7 hours

Ha : μ ≠ 7 hours

From given output we get,

Test statistic = z = -1.60

p-value = 0.1096

Since, p-value = 0.1096 is greater than 0.01 significance level, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.

Therefore, there is not sufficient evidence to conclude that, the population mean hours of sleep for students at WSU different than 7 hours.

Assume the gen. population gets an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. You randomly select 55 college students and survey them on their sleep habits. From this sample, the mean number of hours of sleep is found to be 6.83 hours with a standard deviation of 0.55 hours. You claim that college students get less sleep than the general population. That is, you claim the mean number of hours of sleep for all college students is less than...

Some faculty believe that college students get less than 7 hours of sleep per night on average. A survey of 30 students found an average of 6.5 hours of sleep with a standard deviation of 1.8 hours. Are the faculty justified in their belief? Test this hypothesis at the 5% significance level. State the Null Hypothesis, Alternative Hypothesis, and the p-value for the hypothesis test. Then state your Decision (Reject H0 or Do Not Reject H0) and your Conclusion.
