A drug company was concerned about the length of time a particular drug retained its potency. A random sample (Sample 1) of 10 bottles of the product was drawn from current production and analyzed for potency. A second sample (Sample 2) was obtained, stored for 1 year, and then analyzed.
The measurements obtained are as follows:
Sample 1 10.6 10.2 10.5 10.3 10.8 9.8 10.6 10.7 10.2 10.0
Sample 2 9.9 9.8 9.6 10.1 10.2 10.1 9.7 9.5 9.6 9.8
Assume that sample 1 and sample 2 are independent. Perform a test to determine whether the potency level is significantly different for the drug after being stored for a year at α = .05.
(a) For questions (a) to (c), we assume that two populations have equal variance. Set up the appropriate H0 and Ha.
(b) Calculate the test statistic.
(c) Find the P-value (or rejection region) and make your conclusion.
(d) Is it reasonable to assume two populations have equal variances? Why or Why not?
