Using Minitab we obtained the following values, where the values in HI column are leverage values. Using the leverage value method, how many influential observations are there?

           x                      y                  HI

22                   12                 .38

24                   21                 .28

26                   31                 .22

28                   35                 .20

40                   70                 .92

The stepwise regression procedure

a)   starts with a model with no predictors

b)   starts with a model with all of the predictors c)   starts with a model with one predictor

d)   None of these alternatives is correct

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Only 1 influential observation is there.

As it can be seen from the leverage values that only 1 leverage value is very high from rest of the leverage values, we can easily say that only the last point is an influential observation.

2) Starts with a model with 1 predictor

In forward selection we start with a null model and go on adding the terms in it and in backward elemination we start with a full model and go on removing the variables in it until we get the desired model but in stepwise regression we can add or remove the variables depending on their importance.

Q1. Please download the dataset “Social W orkers” from Canvas and use Minitab for all the analysis. The dataset contains salary and years of experience for 50 social workers. The consulting group working on these data is interested in evaluating how salary ($) changes as a person builds up years of experience (x) in the job. Let’s investigate this question using some of the concepts of linear regression discussed in class this far. a)Fit a linear regression model to these...

Choose either column D or E of the attached data set and analyze using the techniques discussed in class up to this point. This includes the following: Find the appropriate measure of center. Discuss why the chosen measure is most appropriate. Why did you decide against other possible measures of center? Find the appropriate measure of variation. The measure of variation chosen here should match the measure of center chosen in Part 1. Find the graph(s) needed to appropriately describe...

Q) Over the past few years the percentage of students who leave Lakeland College at the end of the first year has increased. Last year Lakeland started a voluntary one-week orientation program to help first-year students adjust to campus life. If Lakeland is able to show that the orientation program has a positive effect on retention, they will consider making the program a requirement for all first-year students. Lakeland’s administration also suspects that students with lower GPAs have a higher...

As part of the quarterly reviews, the manager of a retail store analyzes the quality of customer service based on the periodic customer satisfaction ratings (on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 = Poor and 10 = Excellent). To understand the level of service quality, which includes the waiting times of the customers in the checkout section, he collected data on 100 customers who visited the store; see the attached Excel file: ServiceQuality. Using Data Mining > Cluster,...
