This week we have been discussing collecting data. As a consumer of data, it is important to understand how readily the results of a survey or experiment can be manipulated. Consider the scenario below which data, or claims from data, can be misrepresented based on sampling bias, wording bias or exaggerated claims.
a} Scenario 1:
In an attempt to understand the nation's opinion on universal healthcare, investigators sponsored an advertisement during an American mid-morning news radio that asked viewers the following question:
"Should everyone have healthcare? Weigh in tonight from 4 to 6 pm. If yes call 1-900-720-6181. If no, call 1-900-720-6182. Charge is 50 cents for the first minute."
Answer the following questions based on Scenario 1(7 points}:
ANSWER::
Scenario 1:
(i) Population: American people
(ii) The investigators do not obtain a representative sample from this sampling scheme.
(iii) Convenience sampling scheme is used - Advertisement in news radio and telephonic survey
(iv) Non-response bias may have occurred. Only those who have got strong opinion on the nation’s opinion on universal healthcare will respond because the response involves Charge of 50 cents for the first minute.
(v) The poor response rate which makes the result of the survey unreliable could be a source of issue when it comes to this scenario.
