Researchers are interested in the effectiveness of a new drug therapy for Alzheimer’s. The researchers predict that the new drug therapy will decrease the symptoms of the disease over time. 100 elderly individuals were recruited to take the new drug therapy. The average number of symptoms they displayed was 6. Individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s who did not take the new drug therapy had an average of 9 symptoms with a variance of 4. Test whether the new drug therapy is effective using an α = .05.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

P= 0.5 , x=6 and n=100 and p1= x/n= 6/100= 0.06

Given level of significance= 0.05

NULL HYPOTHESIS H0:

ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS Ha:

Test statistic

Z = p1-P/sqrt(P*Q/n)

Z= 0.06-0.5/sqrt(0.5*0.5/100)

Z= -0.44/0.05

Z= -8.8

P VALUE= 0.00000

Since P value SMALLER THAN 0.05 THEREFORE SIGNIFICANT.

Decision: REJECT NULL HYPOTHESIS H0.

Conclusion: We have sufficient evidence to conclude that the new drug therapy will decrease the symptoms of the disease over time at 0.05 level of significance.

Suppose a researcher is interested in the effectiveness of a new novel talk therapy technique in reducing overall depression as identified via score report on the geriatric depression scale (GDS). In order to carry out this hypothesis, the researcher gathers a SRS of participants in the program and performs the GDS test prior to, and after initiation of the new therapy technique (on the same subjects). The following table summarizes the results: GDS Score Prior to intervention GDS Score Following...

Researchers investigated the extent to which Narcotics Anonymous (NA) played a role in the continued sobriety of individuals in recovery from opioid addiction. The researchers were interested in assessing whether recovering individuals attended NA meetings at a rate of at least once every other week (i.e., 27 weeks per year). They randomly sampled 15 individuals from a pool of volunteers recruited from a therapist office and found that on average, these individuals attended 33.07 meetings per year with a standard...

Medical researchers interested in determining the relative effectiveness of two different drug treatments on people with a chronic mental illness established two independent test groups. The first group consisted of 7 people with the illness, and the second group consisted of 12 people with the illness. The first group received treatment 1 and had a mean time until remission of 199 days, with a standard deviation of 6 days. The second group received treatment 2 and had a mean time...

1-Researchers are interested in a new drug intervention for those people with an abnormally high heart rate. We accrue 90 people in our study and assign 30 patients to take the placebo (the subjects do not know that it is a placebo), another 30 are assigned the current drug regiment, and the remaining 30 are assigned the new drug. Determine if the three groups are equal and if all are not equal, which drugs are different? To answer this question,...

Researchers are studying stress and want to know if a new drug reduces feelings of chronic stress. They take a sample of 12 chronically stressed individuals and randomly assign them into one of three groups. The control group does not get the drug, the first experimental group gets one dose of the drug, and the second experimental group gets two doses of the drug. Then they record the number of symptoms of stress that the participants display. What can they...

A pharmaceutical company needs to know if its new cholesterol drug, Praxor, is effective at lowering cholesterol levels. It believes that people who take Praxor will average a greater decrease in cholesterol level than people taking a placebo. After the experiment is completed, the researchers find that the 25 participants in the treatment group lowered their cholesterol levels by a mean of 23.5 points with a standard deviation of 5.8 points. The 25 participants in the control group lowered their...

A new over-the-counter medicine to treat a sore throat is to be tested for effectiveness. The makers of the medicine take two random samples of 25 individuals showing symptoms of a sore throat. Group 1 receives the new medicine and Group 2 receives a placebo. After a few days on the medicine, each group is interviewed and asked how they would rate their comfort level 1-10 (1 being the most uncomfortable and 10 being no discomfort at all). The results...
