Given the length an athlete throws a hammer is a normal random variable with mean 60 feet and variance 9, what is the probability he throws it between 55 feet and 65 feet?

Answer #1

Solution:-

Given that,

mean = = 60

standard deviation = = 9 = 3

P (55< x < 65 )

P ( 55 - 60 / 3) < ( x -  / ) < ( 65 - 60 / 3 )

P (-1.67 < z < 1.67)

P ( z < 1.67 ) - P ( z < -1.67)

Using z table

= 0.9525 - 0.0475 = 0.9051

Probability = 0.9051
