What is the definition of stratified random sampling ?

What is the definition of stratified random sampling ?

Answer #1

Stratified random sampling is a method of sampling that involves the division of a population into smaller sub-groups known as strata.

These strata's are formed based on members' shared attributes or characteristics.

Suppose we want to estimate the average weights that a person can lift.

In this case it would be more reasonable to divide the pooolulation based on age groups. The age groups selected are the strata's in this case.

Stratified sampling achieves greater precision than a simple random sample.
