Question 2

A coffee dispenser machine fills cups at amounts that are uniformly distributed. Specifically, the machine dispenses between 10oz and 13oz of coffee, following a Uniform distribution. I select a small 12oz cup.

  1. Is the amount of coffee dispensed a discrete or continuous random variable? Explain.
  2. Graph the probability function for P(X), where X is the amount of coffee dispensed.
  3. What is the average amount of coffee dispensed?
  4. What is the more likely amount (mode) of coffee that will be dispensed?
  5. What is P( X = 12) ?
  6. Find the probability that my 12oz. cup will not overflow, i.e. P( X ≤ 12).
  7. How large of a coffee cup should I have if I want to be 95% confident that the dispenser won't overfill the cup?

A coffee vending machine is set to fill a cup with an average of 6.5 ounces of soft drink. The amount of fill varies. Sometimes the machine overfills the cup until it overflows and sometimes it fills it under the legal minimum. Suppose the amount of fill, X, follows the Normal distribution with an average of 6.5 ounces and a standard deviation of 0.3 ounces. What is the probability that a 7-ounce cup overflows, that is, find P(X>7)? A) Given...

Problem 2) A coffee machine dispenses coffee into paper cups. You’re supposed to get 10 ounces of coffee, but the amount varies slightly from cup to cup. The amounts in ounces measured in a random sample of 20 cups are given in the Excel file, tab coffee machine. a) For one experimental unit, what is the response variable? Categorical or quantitative? b) Verify the two conditions for using the normal distribution for the sample mean:  Random sample?  Is...
