A biologist is studying a new hybrid tomato. It is known that the seeds of this hybrid tomato have probability .80 of germinating. the biologist plants 8 seeds. (Hint: this is a binomial experiment with n=8 trials. Each seed planted represents an independent trial. We’ll say germination is a success) what is the number of seeds that will germinate?

Answer #1

We want the expected value of a Binomial distribution = n * p = 0.8 * 8 = 6.4

Binomial Probability = nCx * (p)x * (q)n-x, where n = number of trials and x is the number of successes.

Conditions for BINOMIAL

(1)There are a fixed number of trials.

(2) The process is random

(3) There are only 2 outcomes, either getting it right or wrong. These outcomes are mutually exclusive.

(4) The trials is independent of the other and

(5) The probability of each trial remains the same from trial to trial.

A research team at Cornell University conducted a study showing that approximately 10% of all businessmen who wear ties wear them so tightly that they actually reduce the blood flow to the brain, diminishing cerebral functions (Source: Chances: Risks and Odds in Everyday Life, by James Burke). At a board meeting, 20 businessmen wear ties. a. Using the binomial formula, set up the probability that 12 businessmen wear ties that are tied too tightly and then simplify. A biologist is...

Problem 1: Relations among Useful Discrete Probability Distributions. A Bernoulli experiment consists of only one trial with two outcomes (success/failure) with probability of success p. The Bernoulli distribution is P (X = k) = pkq1-k, k=0,1 The sum of n independent Bernoulli trials forms a binomial experiment with parameters n and p. The binomial probability distribution provides a simple, easy-to-compute approximation with reasonable accuracy to hypergeometric distribution with parameters N, M and n when n/N is less than or equal...
