Agave is a plant that grows in Mexico and the southwestern U.S. Researchers at Penn State University conducted a study to see if a syrup made from the Agave nectar was effective at relieving cough in children. In this study the researchers recruited 80 children who went to an outpatient pediatric practice with a cough. The researchers randomly assigned the children to one of two groups (40 to each). One group received a grape flavored agave nectar and the other group received a placebo in the form of grape flavored water, which tasted identical. The parents of the children were then asked to complete a survey on how frequently the child coughed that night. The parents were aware of whether the child received the agave or the placebo, but were instructed not to provide any information about this to their children. The researchers found that there was no statistically significant difference between the agave and placebo groups.Identify the: (1) experimental design, (2) subjects, (3) explanatory variable, and (4) response variable.

One of the researchers was concerned that younger children might respond differently to the cough syrup, so they propose an alternative design, wherein the children are split according to age. Since the 80 children in the study were from ages 4 to 12, they decided to make 2 groups, ages 4-8 and 8-12.It was found that 36 children were in the 4-8 age group, and the rest (44 children) were in the 8-12 age group. For age group 4-8,18 children were randomly assigned to agave nectar and 18 to the grape flavored water. Similar random assignment was made for age group 8-12. Which of the following describes the design of this experiment?

Select one:

a. Stratified random design.

b. Randomized block design.

c. Simple random design.

d. Cluster design.

Introduction to Probability and Statistics Is honey a cough remedy? Does a teaspoon of honey before bed really calm a child’s cough? To test the folk remedy, pediatric researchers carried out a designed study involving a sample of 105 children who were ill with an upper respiratory tract infection. On the first night, parents rated their children’s cough symptoms on a scale from 0 (no problems at all) to 30 (extremely severe). On the second night, the parents were instructed...

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young children presents significant challenges to the children, their parents, and their classroom teachers. Stimulant medication can effectively treat 60% to 70% of youth with ADHD. Yet many parents seek alternative therapies, and Hypericum perforatum (St John's wort) is 1 of the top 3 alternative therapies used. In a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort) for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents, 2008;299(22):2633-2641, the authors...

(Case evaluation, Questions 26-39)             In a study, the researchers were interested in seeing whether if Ariana Grande’s music can be sexually stimulating to men. The researchers decided to include male students from Hunter College, age ranging from 18-20, without pre-diagnosed sexual dysfunctions. Out of the possible N=10,538 students who meet the criteria for participation, 200 men were randomly selected by computer to participate. After having the participants sign the informed consent, the researchers randomly assigned these subjects into 4...

The following 4 questions refer to Scenario 4. Generally speaking, people are pretty bad at telling whether or not someone is lying. Researchers are interested in studying if age is associated with ability to tell if someone is lying. Researchers compare a group of children (ages 8-10), adolescents (ages 14-17), and adults (ages 25-45) on their ability to tell if a person in a recorded video is lying or telling the truth. A. What is the null hypothesis for scenario...

Ordway et al. (2014) conducted a longitudinal follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine the effects of the Minding the Baby (MTB) home visiting program on parental reflective functioning (RF) and on child behavior. The study included intervention and control groups, and the women who participated in the MTB intervention described their children as having significantly fewer externalizing child behaviors post intervention. However, there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups for parental RF....

Depressed patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a placebo group, a group that received a moderate dose of the drug, and a group that received a high dose of the drug. After four weeks of treatment, the patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The higher the score, the more depressed the patient. We are now also interested if a patient's weight has an effect on the drug's effectiveness. Patients were categorized as either underweight, overweight, or 'medium...

At what age do babies learn to crawl? Does it take longer to learn in the winter when babies are bundled in clothes to restrict their movement? Data was collected from parents who brought their babies to New York University Infant Study Center to participate in one of a number of experiments between 1988 and 1991. Parents reported ages (in weeks) at which their child was first able to crawl a distance of four feet within one minute. The researchers...
