In a pie chart, a circle is divided into sectors of varying area, such that each sector is representative of the particular proportion of the data.

So, graphically, pie chart is useful in getting a glimpse of relative proprotions of different groups of data being compared.

For instance, milk is consumed in different forms worldwide, like plain milk, skimmed milk, buttermilk, etc. So a pie chart in this case will be representative of corresponding proportions of the different forms of milk.
