you have collected data about the average response time of participants in your study. You are delighted to find that the variable is normally distributed. More than half your respondents tank longer than 16 seconds to respond and 1/3 take less than 12 seconds to respond. What is the median response time for your participants.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Lets say there are total of 100 participants arranged in increasing order of response time.

So first 1/3rd participants (1-33) will be the ones taking less than 12 seconds.

Lets say 51 participants take longer than 16 seconds (this is assumed as 51 is the lowest number which is more than half of participants). These 51 participants will be towards the end i.e. 50-100

All other participants from 34-49 will take 12-16 seconds to respond.

Now keeping this arrangement in mind, we can certainly say that median response time of the participants is more than 16 seconds because median time will be the average time of 50th and 51st participants both of which are more than 16 seconds in our case.

The answer will be same for any number of participants because its the arrangement that matters.

You want to conduct your own study about the relationship between happiness and annual hours worked. You recruit 12 participants for your study. There are 6 women and 6 men. 1. How many ways could you interview the participants? They will each be interviewed once. [2 marks] 2. What is the probability that you interview the volunteers in alternating gender order? The Rio Salado leadership team wants to determine if students there have a longer than average time to Associate’s degree completion. If they determine the length of time is greater than the finding in the Chronicle of Higher Education, they will invest in increasing resources aimed at reducing the time to degree completion. 1. Does listening to music increase the average amount of time you study? Twenty people participate in an experiment to test the effects of music on studying. Half of the participants listen to no music first and then classical music. The other half listen to classical music first and then no music. The amount of time they study is recorded (in minutes) each time. A 95% confidence interval of (-36.84, 60.56) is found. What conclusion can we make? (No music...

Week 5 #2 Take your survey data and code the gender question as Male=0 and Female=1. Suppose we hypothesize that women are more likely to respond to surveys than men are. Specifically, we believe that more than 55 percent of all respondents are women (this equates to the proportion of the gender variable to be greater than 0.55). Use the methods learned this week to test this hypothesis. Make sure you go through the 6-step process of testing the hypothesis....
