A personality test has a subsection designed to assess the "honesty" of the test-taker. Suppose that you're interested in the mean score, on this subsection among the general population. You decide that you'll use the mean of a random sample of scores on this subsection to estimate . What is the minimum sample size needed in order for you to be 95% confident that your estimate is within 4 of the mean? Use the value 22 for the population standard deviation of scores on this subsection. Carry your intermediate computations to at least three decimal places. Write your answer as a whole number (and make sure that it is the minimum whole number that satisfies the requirements).

One personality test available on the World Wide Web has a subsection designed to assess the "honesty" of the test-taker. After taking the test and seeing your score for this subsection, you're interested in the mean score, μ, among the general population on this subsection. The website reports that μ is 145, but you believe that μ is greater than 145. You decide to do a statistical test. You choose a random sample of people and have them take the...

A psychologist is studying the self image of smokers, which she measures by the self-image (SI) score from a personality inventory. She would like to estimate the mean SI score, μ, for the population of all smokers. She plans to take a random sample of SI scores for smokers and estimate μ via this sample. Assuming that the standard deviation of SI scores for the population of all smokers is 80, what is the minimum sample size needed for the...

Executives of a supermarket chain are interested in the amount of time that customers spend in the stores during shopping trips. The executives hire a statistical consultant and ask her to determine the mean shopping time, μ, of customers at the supermarkets. The consultant will collect a random sample of shopping times at the supermarkets and use the mean of these shopping times to estimate μ. Assuming that the standard deviation of the population of shopping times at the supermarkets...

Managers at an automobile manufacturing plant would like to estimate the mean completion time of an assembly line operation, μ. The managers plan to choose a random sample of completion times and estimate μ via the sample. Assuming that the standard deviation of the population of completion times is 10.1 minutes, what is the minimum sample size needed for the managers to be 95% confident that their estimate is within 1.7 minutes of μ? There are dozens of personality tests available on the World Wide Web. One test, scored on a scale of 0 to 200 , is designed to give an indication of how "personable" the test taker is, with higher scores indicating more "personability." Suppose that scores on this test have a mean of 99 and a standard deviation of 21 . Complete the following statements about the distribution of scores on this personality test. (a) According to Chebyshev's theorem, at least-----...

A new IQ test is designed so that the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is 12 for the population of normal adults. Find the sample size necessary to estimate the mean IQ score of residents of a state. We want to be 95% confident that our sample mean is within 4 IQ points of the true mean. Assume that sigmaσ =12 and determine the required sample size.

2. A psychologist has developed a personality test on which scores can range from 0 to 200.  The mean score of well-adjusted people is 100.  It is assumed that the less well-adjusted an individual is, the more the individual’s score will differ from the mean value.  The Dean of Students at XYZ University is interested in discovering whether the students at XYZ are well-adjusted, on average. Fifteen students are randomly sampled. Their scores are:  80, 60, 120, 140, 200, 70, 30, 180, 70, 150,...
