The national council onsmall buisnesses is interested i the proportion of small buisnesses that declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. Since there are so many small buisnesses, the national council intends to estimate the proportion from a random sample. Let p be the proportion of small buisjesses that declared chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. A business student is interested in estimating the 90% confidence interval for the proportion of students who bring laptops to campus. He wishes a precise estimate and is willing to draw a large sample that will keep the sample proportion within eight percentage points of the population proportion. What is the minimum sample size required by this student, given that no prior estimate of the population proportion is available?

490/654 Venezuelan women from the armed forces said they were not interested in American Football. A 95% confidence interval for the proportion with no interest in American Football is 0.70 to 0.80. A) What would margin of error be for the CI of this proportion? Wouldn't this just be 10%? B) We then sampled 1568 more Venezuelan woman. They were also asked if they had interest in American Football. If we constructed another CI based on this sample, how would...

1. A university Dean is interested in determining the proportion of students who receive some sort of financial aid. Rather than examine the records for all students, the dean randomly selects 200 students and finds that 118 of them are receiving financial aid. By hand, and using formulas for the “Margin of Error” (i.e. not calculator confidence interval), find a 98% confidence interval to estimate the true proportion of students on financial aid. (Use 3 decimal places for proportions.) 2....

The American Veterinary Medical Association conducted a survey of veterinary clinics to estimate the proportion that do not treat large animals (cows, horses, etc.). The survey was mailed to a random sample of 120 veterinary clinics throughout the country and of these, 88 responded that they do not treat large animals. A 95% confidence interval for p, the proportion of veterinary clinics that do not treat large animals would be wider. would be the same length. would be narrower. could...

You are interested in interviewing people who own both a cat and a dog. The estimated incidence rate in the population is 17%. You expect a survey completion rate of 45%. What final sample size would be required to obtain a statistical estimate of a parameter with an expected proportion of 50% within +/- 3% with 95% confidence? What initial sample size (e.g., how many invites) is required to obtain the necessary final sample size for analysis?

Find an example of a confidence interval for a proportion in the media or scholarly literature (do not use a statistics textbook or website/article that is teaching or demonstrating statistics to find the example). At the very least it must include either the lower and upper bounds or a point estimate with a margin of error. Make sure you have a Proportion confidence interval and NOT a CI for the mean, odds ratio, hazard ratio, or relative risk as these...
