A Statistician takes a random sample of 173 college math books to compare the weight (in pounds) of each book to the number of pages in it. She obtains a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.64. A colleague asks the Statistician to express the weights in ounces instead of pounds (1 pound = 16 ounces). What is the correlation coefficient between weight and number of pages of the textbooks if weight is expressed in ounces instead of pounds?

Answer #1

the correlation coefficient between weight and number of pages of the textbooks if weight is expressed in ounces instead of pounds is :-

[ explanation:-

the value of r between  the weight (in pounds) of each book to the number of pages in it = 0.64

we know that, correlation coefficient is independent of change of scale.

i.e here, if you multiply all the value by 16(which is the scale here)..the value of r will remain same.

so, the value of r between  the weight (in ounces) of each book to the number of pages in it = the same as calculated before =  0.64]
