Consider the dollar value (in thousands) of gifts returned to each of your department stores after the holiday season:
a.compute the sample standard deviation.
b. interpret the standard deviation in a paragraph discussing the variation from one store to another.
X | (X - X̄)² |
13 | 16.00 |
8 | 81.00 |
36 | 361.00 |
18 | 1.00 |
6 | 121.00 |
21 | 16.00 |
X | (X - X̄)² | |
total sum | 102 | 596.00 |
n | 6 | 6 |
sample std dev = √ [ Σ(X - X̄)²/(n-1)] = √ (596/5) = 10.92
b)
mean = ΣX/n = 102.000 / 6 = 17
As we can see the mean is 17 and there are values which are highlt greater than 17 and highly lesser than 17.
That's why the variation is so high.
