Exercise 4. A different analysis of the sleep problem
In a class survey, students are asked how many hours they sleep per night. In the random sample of 18 students, the (sample) mean is 6.8 hours with a (sample) standard deviation of 1.9 hours. We wish to know if this shows that the class’s student population on average has gotten a different amount of sleep from the recommended 8 hours of sleep at the α = .01 level. The distribution of sleep for this population follows a normal distribution.

g) Separately, find the 98% confidence interval of average sleep for this class. Provide the upper bound with the answer rounded to 2 decimal places.

Sleep – College Students: Suppose you perform a study about the hours of sleep that college students get. You know that for all people, the average is about 7 hours. You randomly select 40 college students and survey them on their sleep habits. From this sample, the mean number of hours of sleep is found to be 6.1 hours with a standard deviation of 0.97 hours. A class survey in a large class for first-year college students asked, "About how many minutes do you study on a typical weeknight?" The mean response of the 284 students was x⎯⎯⎯x¯ = 138 minutes. Suppose that we know that the studey time follows a Normal distribution with standard deviation σσ = 65 minutes in the population of all first-year students at this university.
