There is a population where no one has any COVID symptoms. Even though everyone in the population is asymptomatic, in reality 5% of this population is a carrier of the virus.

There is a test that accurately identifies 90% of the people who are carrying the virus. If a person does not carry the virus the test identifies that accurately 85% of the time.

A random person in this population is given the test, and the test comes back positive for the virus.

What is the probability that the person is actually a carrier of the virus?

⦁   Suppose in August the Covid-19 situation has calmed down. Since not everyone shows symptoms and some symptoms could have been a different pneumonia we might use an anti-body test to see if people have had the disease. Let’s assume by August 40% of the US has had the disease. The anti-body test is not perfect. Some people will get “false positives” or “false negatives”. 90% of people who test positive will actually have had the disease. 95% of people...

Many people think that everyone should be tested for the virus. However, it is generally a bad idea to do mass screening of an entire population, due to the risk of false positives. The most important example of this is that many women are no longer recommended to have annual mammograms to detect breast cancer. A mammogram has a false positive rate of about 9 percent. This means that assuming a woman is healthy, a mammogram will still come back...

1) The reliability of a particular skin test for tuberculosis (TB) is as follows: the sensitivity of the test is 0.9 (the test comes back positive 90% of the time if the subject has TB) and the specificity of the test is 0.95 (if the subject does not have TB, the test comes back negative 95% of the time). In a large population, only 0.3% (0.003) of the people have TB. A person is selected at random and given the...

Suppose that 44,000 people in New Zealand (population 4,400,000) carry a particular rare gene X that places them at a higher risk of developing cancer. A medical test will correctly indicate the presence of gene X with 0.9 probability when carried out on a person who carries gene X. If the person does not carry gene X it will incorrectly indicate the presence of gene X with probability 0.05. (i) Draw a fully labelled tree diagram where the first branch...

Read the following case carefully and then answer the questions. In the movie Face/Off, John Travolta got a new look by exchanging faces with Nicolas Cage. John could receive a much less troublesome new look by using Botox, a treatment discovered by Vancouver’s Dr. Jean Carruthers, who came upon the cosmetic potential of Botox in 1982 while treating a woman with eye spasms.
