Assume that there are two different TV ads showing repeatedly in October, and both criticize a candidate.

A researcher does a study to verify her theory that people who saw the TV Ads that contain HARSH criticisms of the candidate will rate the candidate lower than people who saw ads with MILD criticism of the candidate.

Suppose the researcher picks at random 4 voters from among all voters who have already seen MILD ad only. Then she also picks 4 voters at random from among all voters who have already seen the HARSH ad only. She has each voter rate the candidate on a scale from 0 to 25.

Results are shown below.

Mild 10
Mild 14
Mild 18
Mild 23

Answer #1

12. "TYPE OF AD" is an ordinal scale variable, because it is a nominal variable and also has an order (Harsh/mild)

13. If one of the voters above was chosen at random the best estimate of the score would be the average of the scores: 13.5 . This is because each score is equally likely to be picked. Hence the expected score is the average score.

14. If we knew the voter saw the HARSH ad, then the best estimate of the RATING for that voter would be average of the scores 6,8,12,17: 10.75. Thisis becuse each of the Harsh scores is equally probable to be picked up and hence the expected score is the average score.

15. If we knew the type of the AD, the best estimate would be 16.25 for mild and 10.75 for Harsh ad. If the AD is mild, adjustment is 0 and if the AD is harsh, adjustment would be +(16.25-10.75) = +5.5

Average adjustment = (0+5.5)/2 = +2.75
