Various studies indicate that approximately 9% of the world's population is left handed. You think this number is actually higher. You take an SRS of 222 people and find that 23 of them are left handed. Test your claim at the 5% significance level.

1. State your null and alternative hypotheses.

2.State the rejection region.

3. Calculate the test statistic.

4.Determine the P-value for your test.

5. State your conclusion for your hypothesis test.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Below are the null and alternative Hypothesis,
Null Hypothesis, H0: p = 0.09
Alternative Hypothesis, Ha: p > 0.09

Rejection Region
This is right tailed test, for α = 0.05
Critical value of z is 1.64.
Hence reject H0 if z > 1.64

Test statistic,
z = (pcap - p)/sqrt(p*(1-p)/n)
z = (0.1036 - 0.09)/sqrt(0.09*(1-0.09)/222)
z = 0.71

P-value Approach
P-value = 0.2389
As P-value >= 0.05, fail to reject null hypothesis.

There is not sufficient evidence to conclude that the proportion is greater than 9%

According to most estimates, 10% of the people in the general population are left-handed and 90% are right-handed. A neurological theory of handedness and cerebral dominance predicts that there should be a disproportionate number of left-handers among artists. For a sample of n = 150 artists, a psychologist finds that 24 are left-handed. Is there a higher proportion of left-handers among artist than there is for the general population? Test with alpha set at .05. For full points indicate in...

Self-reported injuries among left- and right-handed people were compared in a survey of 1896 college students in British Columbia, Canada. Of the 180 left-handed students, 93 reported at least one injury. In the same period, 619 of the 1716 right-handed students reported at least one injury. Conduct a significance test to determine if the proportions of left-handed injured students is equal to the proportion of right-handed injured students. You are hired by a gambler to test a standard die of six faces with the numbers 1 through 6 on the six faces. Specifically, the gambler wants you to test to see if the probability that the number “4” comes up is actually equal to 1/6. You toss the die 100 times and you get 20 “4”s. Perform the test at a significance level of 5%. (State the null and alternative hypotheses. Be sure to clearly state the “rejection...
