(a) A box contains 4 marbles, 2 Red, 1 Green, 1 Blue. Consider an experiment that consists of taking 1 marble from the box, then replacing it in the box and drawing a second marble from the box. Describe the sample space. repeat when the second marble is drawn without first replacing the first marble.
(b) What is the probability that the first marble was Green and the second was Blue with replacement?
(c) What is the probability that the first marble was Green and the second was Blue without replacement?
Solution:
number of red balls = 2
number of green balls = 1
number of blue balls = 1
total number of balls = 4
( a )
since this experiment is done with replacement,
number of colours = 3
Sample space = 3 * 3 = 9
( b )
probability that the first marble was Green and the second was Blue with replacement=(1/4)*(1/4)= 0.25*0.25 = 0.0625
( c )
probability that the first marble was Green and the second was Blue with out replacement = ( 1/4 ) * ( 1/3 )
= 0.25 * 0.33
= 0.0825
