A psychiatrist has noticed that the schizophrenics who have been in the hospital the longest scored the lowest on a mental orientation test. The data for five schizophrenics are listed in the table below.

a. Calculate SP using either method, and then calculate r. (8 points)

Years of hospitalization     Orientation Score

X     Y

1                                       2

2                                       3

4                                       2

5 6

8    7

   ΣX =                                 ΣY =

    SSx = 30                           SSy = 22

    MX = MY  =

b. Determine the significance of this correlation at alpha .05, two-tailed. Give the critical value and state whether or not there is a significant association between the two variables. (4 pts.)

c. Interpret the meaning of this correlation in terms of the problem. What is the direction of the relationship between years of hospitalization and orientation score? (4 points)

d. Find the regression equation for predicting Y from X. (4 points)

e. Calculate the predicted orientation score for patients who have being hospitalized for 6 and 12 years, respectively.  (3 points)

Anyone who has been outdoors on a summer evening has probably heard crickets. Did you know that it is possible to use the cricket as a thermometer? Crickets tend to chirp more frequently as temperatures increase. This phenomenon was studied in detail by George W. Pierce, a physics professor at Harvard. In the following data, x is a random variable representing chirps per second and y is a random variable representing temperature (°F). x 20.2 15.0 20.7 18.3 17.3 15.5...

A geriatric research project has been tracking the health and cognitive functions of the elderly population in Arizona. The table below shows the memory test scores from 16 elderly residents, tested first when they were 65 years old and again when they were 75 years old. The researcher wants to know if there is a significant decline in memory functions based on this sample. The alpha level was set at α = .05 for the hypothesis test. Memory score Subject...
