What is the appropriate test (e.g., Independent Samples T Test, Paired Samples T-Test, ANOVA, Correlation) and why (e.g., what type of variables are you analyzing)?

What is the effect of living arrangements on the overall satisfaction at University.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The answer is:

We want to know the effect of living arrangements on the overall satisfaction at University. Therefore we have to quantify the association between living arrangements and the overall satisfaction at the university. Hence the appropriate test here will be a correlation. We have living arrangements as a categorical variable, while overall satisfaction should be a quantitative number. Depending upon how data is received, we can assign numbers to the living arrangements and find the required correlation.

None of the other tests mentioned can help find the association.

a) Provide a real life example scenario for a paired-samples t-test that includes sample data for N = 4 in each condition. Do not only present the numbers; you need a reasonable example of something that could be tested with a paired-samples t-test. b) Explain why your example is appropriate for a paired-samples t-test. c) Conduct the paired-samples t-test (two-tailed test with an alpha of .05), showing your work for each step.

What causes the p-value to be the same in an independent sample t-test and as a one-way ANOVA? 1. Is it because dependent variables are the same while the independent variable is different across the two methods? 2. Because ANOVA is a special case of the independent samples t-test. 3. Because ANOVA is a generalization of the independent sample t-test?
