Two alternatives to buffer against psychological frailties in the interpretation of data are

• use of a specified p-value for the Type I error rate (typically 0.05), or

• routine use of confidence intervals.

Which of these two alternatives is better in your opinion? Why? maximum 250 words

Answer #1

ANSWER:

Confidence intervals are very good for two tailed test. That is alternative hypothesis shows that test is two tailed. Confidence interval provide a range of values for parameter to be estimated.

P-value can be used with any type of test. That is test can be right tailed, left tailed or two tailed.

So if reseacher need only test results so p-value should be used while if researcher need to be estimate the parameter then confidence interval should be used.

The survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA) is a psychological test that measures the motivation, attitude toward school, and study habits of students. Scores range from 0 to 200. The mean score of US college students is about 115, and the standard deviation is about 30. A teacher who suspects that older students have better attitudes towards school gives the SSHA to 25 students who are at least 30 years of age. Their mean score is M=132.2. a. State...

In an experiment designed to test the effectiveness of paroxetine for treating bipolar depression, subjects are measured using the Hamilton Depression Scale with the results below[1]. 43 patients were used in the placebo group; the sample mean was 21.57 and the sample standard deviation was 3.87. The treated group had 33 patients, a sample mean of 20.38 and s = 3.91. A lower score is better. Go through “The Drill” for independent t-tests (Use a 0.05 α-level and the corresponding...
