The measures of central tendency discussed in this chapter are designed to reveal information about the center of a distribution of values. Measures of dispersion provide information about the spread of all the values in a distribution around the center values. Assume you were conducting an opinion poll on voters’ approval ratings of the job performance of the mayor of the city where you live. Do you think the mayor would be more interested in the central tendency or the dispersion measures associated with the responses to your poll? Why?
Solution:
See the thing is that in what response of the poll the mayor would be more interested. As we have studied that the central tendencies only gives us an overall idea that what the cumulative response tells. But the measure of dispersion gives the idea that how much the responses are scattered around the central value. So I think a Mayor of city will be more interested in the measure of dispersion as it suggest him/her that which of the specifc area is grey in respect of work, which is to be improved and which are the areas of work where the peoples are happy with the current job performances.
Hence the Mayor will definitely choose the measure of dispersion to know the response on job performance.
