Assume that we want to estimate the mean IQ score for the population of statistics students. How many statistics students must be randomly selected for IQ tests if we want 95% confidence that the sample mean is within 2 IQ points of the population mean? Assume that σ = 15. Round the answer to the nearest large whole number!

Answer #1

Solution

standard deviation =   =15

Margin of error = E = 2

At 95% confidence level the z is ,

= 1 - 95% = 1 - 0.95 = 0.05

/ 2 = 0.05 / 2 = 0.025

Z/2 = Z0.025 = 1.96

sample size = n = [Z/2* / E] 2

n = ( 1.96*15 /2 )2

n =216.09

Sample size = n =216

The standard IQ test is designed so that the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is 15 for the population of all adults. We wish to find the sample size necessary to estimate the mean IQ score of all people who have successfully passed a college statistics course.
