Atlantic Power, a large electric power utility, has built a modern nuclear power plant. This plant discharges waste water that is allowed to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Environment Canada has ordered that the waste water temperature must be less than 15 degrees Celsius on average. The company would like to determine whether the population mean waste water temperature is indeed less than 15 degrees. In the real world, hundreds of temperature readings would be gathered each day; in this example, we will suppose we have 10 temperature readings in our sample:

12, 10, 8, 15, 17, 20, 10, 10, 9, 15

As the company has been operating for several years, they have a historical standard deviation of 2 degrees Celsius (i.e. this is the population standard deviation).

Calculate the test statistic (round to three decimal places, e.g. -2.0155 becomes -2.016).

Select the most appropriate conclusion

Consolidated Power, a large electric power utility, has just built a modern nuclear power plant. This plant discharges waste water that is allowed to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered that the waste water may not be excessively warm so that thermal pollution of the marine environment near the plant can be avoided. Because of this order, the waste water is allowed to cool in specially constructed ponds and is then released into the...

5. (a) A 500 MW nuclear power generation station has been built in an area spending US$ 200 million. To meet the local demand, additional 300 MW power is necessary. Estimate the cost of the new plant (300 MW). Assume Cost-Capacity factor of 0.8. The mean water temperature downstream from a discharge pipe at a power plant cooling tower should be no more than 100°F. Past studies has shown that the standard deviation of temperature is 2°F. The water temperature was measured on 10 randomly chosen days, and the results are shown below: 96.15 97.81 97.09 95.06   99.46    100.03   99.74    98.85    95.08    98.71 a. B. A regional electric utility currently relies on natural gas for power generation. It has 200 Mw of natural gas capacity that is running on an average of 30 percent efficiency. It is studying options for supplying additional power to its customers. It has all of the following options: Coal:   A 50 megawatt (Mw) coal plant with a capital cost of $50 million and operating costs of $5 million per year plus the cost of coal. The coal plant would...

1 Over the past several years, the proportion of one-person households has been increasing. The Census Bureau would like to test the hypothesis that the proportion of one-person households exceeds 0.27. A random sample of 125 households found that 43 consisted of one person. The Census Bureau would like to set α = 0.05. Use the critical value approach to test this hypothesis. Explain. 2 Organizations are relying more and more on social-networking sites to research job candidates. According to...
