Dictionary meaning of mound is a rounded mass projecting above a surface.

In statistics generally the shape of the distribution of given data set is mound shaped (bell shaped). Normal distribution has mound shape (bell bhaped) curve. So, in the book if you find "mounds" it means it is talking about the shape of the distribution of given data set.

If the distribution of the given date set is mound shaped, it means it is closely following the normal distribution.
