Determine whether the study is an experiment or an observational study, and then identify a major problem with the study.

A medical researcher tested for a difference in systolic blood pressure levels between male and female students who are 12 years of age. She randomly selected four males and four females for her study.

This is an

observational study

experiment

because the researcher

applies a treatment to

does not attempt to modify

the individuals.

Solution:

Observational study: In observational study researcher only observe the outcome of every subjects involved in the study without any manipulation or intervention and then study the outcomes.

Experimental study: In an experimental study we introduce an intervention and then we measure the effect of that intervention to study.

In the given scenario research is only observing the systolic blood pressure of every individual and he is not trying to modify the individuals, therefore this is an observational study.

This is an observational study because the researcher does not attempt to modify the individuals.

A major problem in the observational study is the presence of confounders. A confounder is defined as the variable which is not involved in the study directly, but it may affect the outcome.
