For each of the following scenarios determine if a single sample mean z test, single sample mean t test, paired samples t test, or independent means t test should be conducted. Explain why that procedure is appropriate
A. In the population of American adults, is the mean body temperature different from 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit? Data were collected from a sample of 40 American adults. [3 points]
B. Do PSY 298 students score differently on the Module 5 and Module 6 quizzes? Data were collected from a representative sample of 50 students who took both quizzes. [3 points]
C. In the population, SAT-Math scores are normally distributed with a mean of 500 and standard deviation of 100. Is the mean SAT-Math score for Oregon State Ecampus students different from the known population mean of 500? [3 points]
D. Is the average grade point average (GPA) different for all psychology majors compared to all non-psychology majors? Data were collected from a sample of 50 psychology majors and 50 non-psychology majors. [3 points]
A) Single sample mean t test
As we have to test one population mean but the population standard deviation is not known we will have to use single sample mean t test.
B) Paired sample t test
As there is just one group of students are observations are recorded for both the modules from single set of students, in such cases paired t test is used.
C) Single sample mean z test
In this case we have to test test 1 mean and population standard deviation is given hence we will use z test in such cases.
D) Independent means t test
As both the groups are not related to each other and we wish to test whether the mean for both the groups is same or not we can use independent means t test.
Thank you !!
