You believe that people who have higher GPAs began smoking marijuana in younger grades. You want to test this hypothesis. Identify the independent and dependent variables and develop a hypothesis. What is the best SPSS test based on your hypothesis to analyze your data?

Answer #1

The independent variable here would be the 'GPA' and dependent variable would be 'Age at which person began smoking marijuana'.

We can do a correlation coefficient test to check if the two variables are strongly related.

In that case the hypothesis would be -

Null Hypothesis - H0 : GPAs and the age at which person starts smoking marijuana are not related.

Alternate Hypothesis -  H1 : GPAs and the age at which person starts smoking marijuana are related.

This can be written mathematically as -

--------------------------------------

So, in SPSS we would look for correlation coefficient test for these two variables.

T-tests are used when you want to examine differences but you do not know everything about the population. There are three types of t-tests that you may choose to do: one-sample t-test, independent sample t-test, or dependent sample t-test. You can calculate these by hand, in SPSS, or in Excel. The instructions below can be used for SPSS and your textbook offers instructions for using Excel. Single-sample t-tests These tests are used when you want to determine the probability that...

Question 15 (1 point) A USA Today article claims that the proportion of people who believe global warming is a serious issue is 0.63, but given the number of people you've talked to about this same issue, you believe it is less than 0.63. The hypotheses for this test are Null Hypothesis: p ≥ 0.63, Alternative Hypothesis: p < 0.63. You take a random sample and perform a hypothesis test, getting a p-value of 0.5939. What is the appropriate conclusion?...

Scenario I: Your friend is an Applied Mathematics major and you believe that students who have this major have lower social skills than other college students. You get a nationally normed social skills scale (m =15.00= sx = 7.00) and get 100 Applied Mathematics majors to complete it. You obtain the following, M = 13.24, SD = 6.35. Test whether Applied Mathematics majors have lower social skills than other adults. What are the hypotheses for the study? Ho : Null...
