In a correlational study, we measure participants’ creativity and their intelligence, (a) How would you determine which variable to call X? (b) In a different study, my title is “Creativity as a function of Intelligence.” Which variable is my X variable? Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a.

Generally in correlational studies there is no dependent and independent variable. But in some correlational study we use regression. Here independent variable X is the variable which can explain the variations in the Y variable. Hence here X is the creativity variable as that can explain the variations in intelligence.

b.

"Creativity as a function of Intelligence"

Here Intelligence is the X variable as Creativity is the function of Intelligence, i.e we predict the creativity through the independent variable X, intelligence.

1.  Imagine that you conducted a correlational study on the relationship between the amount of violence children watch on TV and how aggressively they behave. You measured "amount of violence children watch on TV" by recording the number of hours a group of kids spent watching violent TV shows in a given period of time. You measure aggressive behavior by recording the number of aggressive acts they perform in that same time period. Would a chi-squared test be the appropriate inferential...

The measure of cleaning behavior was subjected to a ______. Participants removed the crumbs substantially more often in the scent condition (M = 3.54) than in the control condition (M = 1.09), t(20) = 2.37, p = .02, thus showing a direct link between scent perception and behavior. What kind of study design is this (experimental or correlational)? If experimental, what is the independent variable? If experimental, what is the dependent variable? What kind of statistical test did the author...

How would one determine the ‘specific activity’ of a particular protein? Would you measure this the same way for all proteins? Why or why not? How would one determine the amount of that same protein in a sample of animal tissue? What tells you more about the contribution of a protein to a metabolic process – the amount or specific activity of that protein? Why?

Video Game Violence and Aggression Design a quasi or a true experimental study, investigating the impact of the independent variable on the dependent variable. Address the following in 500-750 words: Design either a quasi or experimental study to investigate the variables. What is the hypothesis? Describe the types of hypotheses with respect to testing. What does the experimental method allow that the correlation design does not? Identify the independent variable. Identify the dependent variable. Describe how the group will define...

Part 1) Imagine we conduct a study to determine how long it takes salesclerks to approach and help hearing-disabled customers. If differences do emerge between these two IV levels, can we say confidently that the differences are due to deafness, or might there be another variable at play (like chance) that better accounts for any observed differences? Think of two factors that account for why helping times might differ between conditions (other than deafness vs. hearing) Part 2) Why is...

To measure amount of violent video game play, participants were asked to name their three favorite video games, to indicate how often they play each video game (on a scale from 1 = sometimes to 7 = very often), and to rate how violent the content of each video game was (on a scale from 1=not at all to 7=very). As in previous research (e.g., Anderson & Dill, 2000; Greitemeyer, 2014), for each video game, the frequency of game play...
